Title:Home range, activity pattern and habitat use of Dark woolly bat (Kerivoula furva) in Wu-Shi-Keng area, central Taiwan

Abstract:
Understanding wildlife behavior under various environmental conditions is important for conservation strategy and management. Dark woolly bats (Kerivoula furva) use curled leaves of plantain (Musa formosana) as day roost and form different social groups in Wu-Shi-Keng area, Taichung. This research compared their behavior in the warm season (June-August, 2017) and cool season (December, 2017-February, 2018) and analyzed the overlapping of their home-range between different social groups using radio telemetry. Home ranges of the same individual highly overlapped between the warm and cool season, indicating that they do not migrate. Home range size in the warm season was significantly larger than that in the cool season (95 % MCP), but spatial distribution of home ranges did not differ between the two seasons (95% and 50% KDE, 50% MCP). Curled leaves of plantain was the only day roost in the study area. Activity duration of bats in the warm season was significantly longer than that in the cool season. The activity level of bats in the warm season remained high from sunset to sunrise, but in the cool season the activity level gradually decreased after sunset. When the ambient temperature was below 10 °C in the cool season bats did not emerge from their day roosts in the evening. The Dark woolly bats used bare land and river less than their availabilities. The home ranges of individuals from the same social group overlapped significantly more than that of individuals from different social groups.
